Founded in 1903 by James Franklin Devendorf and Frank H. Powers when they established the Carmel Development Company. Marketed to be a haven to poets, writers, artists, and academics, the influences of poets and artists can be seen throughout the city creating a charming and unique community.
Carmel is known for its natural scenery and rich artistic history. Encompassing one square mile, you will find some of the charming old cottages, beautifully remodeled homes and stately mini-mansions that exude "Carmel charm" such as the Hugh Comstock and M. J. Murphy designs.

Carmel always holds a sandcastle contest on the beach. This is a well-attended event for all ages. The build starts at 8 AM, judging from noon until 2 PM. This year, it will be held on Oct. 3, 2010.
The school system is excellent and typically has the highest ranking scores of the local communities.
